Here are some announcements and information regarding events
NOW HIRING FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR
April 17, 2019
SPJUM is currently preparing for the 2019-2020 elections. Elections will be held digitally the week following our April 17th workshop, and will open at 4 p.m. that afternoon and run until 4 p.m. the following Wednesday. Winners will be announced online that evening, and will be expected to meet with other board members at the end of our monthly meeting on May 1st at 4 p.m.

SPJUM positions include treasurer, secretary, media coordinator, community engagement coordinator, president and vice president. Job descriptions for these positions can be found at the bottom of this page.
To apply, email your resume, a headshot and a short description of why you want the position/ why you're qualified to spjumchapter@gmail.com anytime prior to 3 p.m. on April 17th. This information will be provided to voters at the beginning of the voting survey so that they can be informed on who they're voting for. Feel free to include social media handles in your application-- future employers will look at these profiles, so we're happy to help make sure that our members' profiles are cleaned up so they can get jobs and internships in the field without worrying about that when they're turning in applications.
SPJ NASHVILLE CONFERENCE -- AWARDS
March 30, 2019
Several University of Mississippi students and their publications received Mark of Excellence awards at the Society of Professional Journalists Region 12 conference in Nashville this weekend. Ole Miss student journalists and organizations received over a dozen 1st place and finalist positions within the large schools’ division.​

Six 6 University of Mississippi student journalists— Grant McLaughlin, Carter Diggs, Grace Marion, Brooke McNabb, Sarah Liese, and Gracie Snyder-- were in attendance at the conference, which of which was hosted at Lipscomb University. The conference began on March 29th and ended on March 30th. It included workshops with many high achieving journalists from the area and many networking opportunities for the SPJ members in attendance.

Students who earned Mark of Excellence Awards should visit the Student Media Center in Bishop Hall on the University of Mississippi campus to collect their awards. SPJ provides members with many contest entry opportunities throughout the year.

The students who attended the Region 12 conference in Nashville will be writing summaries this week on the tips of the trades they learned at the seminars held Friday night and Saturday. They will be posted on the chapter website and social accounts.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS
President -- organize events, create programing, oversee entire club, organize elections and publications, communicate with regional and national SPJ, help other officers
Vice President -- same as president
Treasurer -- track chapter funding, apply for grants, work with university accountants, help plan trip finances, organize reimbursements
Secretary -- keep log of announcements, write event summaries, take notes at meetings, work with media coordinator to create web content, write newsletters and press releases, handle membership information
Media coordinator -- handle social media and website content, gather photos/videos at events, help secretary with press releases
Community engagement coordinator -- plan workshops, reserve event spaces, organize recruitment materials & events, make posters & pamphlets
Overall requirements for those taking office (after the election) -- must pay national and chapter membership dues, have an email and cell phone, attend half of all meetings at minimum (we can reschedule officer meetings or just set aside some time to discuss important things in the group chat, we'll just need to be able to talk to each other outside of email), apply for SPJ competitions
